The P2 also delivers plenty of high-mid and high frequency presence, giving the vocals a crisp treble edge and lending some extra brightness to the guitar strumming.

The drivers in the P2 are basically pushing the lows and low-mids forward in the mix, so it's still a full, rich sound, but the deepest lows in the sub-bass realm aren't really part of the equation here. Callahan's rich baritone vocals get a tremendous low-mid presence through the P2, while the drums sound less powerful than they would through a heavily bass-boosted system. There's definitely some digital signal processing (DSP) happening to prevent distortion, but it manages not to rob the mix of dynamics.īill Callahan's "Drover," a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the overall sound signature. You won't be fooled into thinking it's packing a subwoofer, but there's a stronger bass response here than you typically get from a speaker this small. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the P2 delivers an impressive thump for its size, and does so without distorting.

So rather than give you two tweeters delivering stereo audio, the P2 instead gives you a single tweeter and a mid-range driver delivering mono, and the result is surprisingly powerful bass response from a relatively tiny speaker. PerformanceĪs mentioned, the P2 is strictly mono, but it can be argued that you'd get very little stereo separation from a speaker this small anyway. Other than that, there's little to complain about in the design department.

You'll need to adjust levels on your Bluetooth source device. The only thing really missing here are volume controls on the speaker itself. Waking your phone up will immediately awake the speaker, as well, which is a unique function. The P2 will shut down automatically after a period of inactivity to preserve battery life. Using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 6s, we understood every recorded word clearly, and there were virtually no audio artifacts-somewhat rare for an embedded mic using Bluetooth.ī&O Play estimates the battery life to be 10 hours, but your results will vary mainly with your volume levels. The mic offers excellent intelligibility. You can also adjust the EQ using presets, or by dragging a dot around a circular graph in various directions to switch to a warmer or brighter sound. It works with the P2's specific features in an intuitive manner, allowing you to customize the operation of your speaker to a degree-you can apply the shake function to control settings like a snooze alarm, for instance. Most apps for Bluetooth speakers are superfluous, but the Beoplay app offers just the right amount of extra control, and is designed well, just like the speaker itself.
The drivers are powered by dual 15-watt class D amplifiers.Īs mentioned, there's a free app that's actually worth downloading. A physical power/pairing button is more or less hidden on the bottom, underneath a rubber panel that also acts as a stabilizing footing for the speaker when it's placed on flat surfaces.īeneath the grille, the P2 employs a mid-range driver and a tweeter to deliver the audio, but it is a mono system. At least, these are the default settings-within the B&O Play app, you can assign different functions to each of these controls. Simply tapping the speaker grille plays or pauses music, shaking it skips to the next track, and double tapping pauses playback. There's a micro USB port on one end of the rounded panel, a built-in leather lanyard on the other, a tiny microphone slot on the bottom, and a status LED inside the speaker grille, but that's about it-everything else is a smooth matte surface or perforated speaker grille.įunctionally, the P2 offers more controls than meets the eye. The surfaces are matte plastic and aluminum, and available in black, blue, or gray. Measuring 5.5 by 3.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD), the 9.7-ounce P2 ($114.97 at Amazon) has a simple design with a front panel that is all speaker grille, and what appears at first to be no buttons. The speaker grille is touch-sensitive for a seamless, strikingly spare design. The P2 also makes great use of a well-designed companion app that allows you to adjust EQ and assign various functions to different controls.

But if the speaker's price transcends its size, so does its audio performance-few speakers this small deliver such a rich, full sound. Most of the Bluetooth speakers we test that are as small as the B&O Play Beoplay P2 tend to cost under $100 or so.
